Skincare is an essential part of the journey toward radiant, healthy skin. With a philosophy that values quality over quantity, the Japanese skincare routine is not only easy to follow but also delivers sustainable results. Let JAM Vietnam take you through each step of this method.
Step 1: Double Cleansing
Goal: Deep but gentle cleansing.
1a. Makeup Remover (Cleansing oil/milk)
- Apply to dry skin.
- Use a moderate amount and massage gently in circular motions for 1–2 minutes. Focus on areas with heavy makeup: eyes, nose, and forehead.
- Add water and massage again to emulsify into a milky texture.
- Rinse with lukewarm water.
1b. Cleanser (Foam/Gel)
- Lather a small amount in your hands (or use a foaming net).
- Apply the foam to your face and gently massage for 30 seconds to 1 minute.
- Rinse with cool water to tighten pores.
- Note: Avoid scrubbing too hard or cleansing for too long, as this can strip natural oils.
Step 2: Exfoliation
Goal: Remove dead skin cells, revealing smoother and brighter skin.
- Exfoliate 1–2 times a week.
- Apply the product (gel or scrub) on damp skin.
- Massage in circular motions, focusing on the nose, chin, and forehead.
- Rinse thoroughly with cool water.
- Note: If you have sensitive skin, choose gentle exfoliators to avoid irritation.
Step 3: Toner
Goal: Balance skin’s pH and prep it for the next steps.
- Pour toner into your hands or onto a cotton pad.
- Gently pat onto your skin – avoid rubbing harshly.
- Tip: Use the “layering” method by applying 2–3 light layers for better hydration without stickiness.
Step 4: Essence
Goal: Deep hydration and cell renewal support.
- Essences are lighter than serums and absorb quickly.
- Pat a few drops evenly over the entire face.
- Focus on dry areas like the cheeks and forehead.
- Note: Use just enough—excess essence may clog pores.
Step 5: Serum
Goal: Target specific concerns like dark spots, wrinkles, or dehydration.
- Use 2–3 drops and apply evenly.
- Gently massage to aid absorption.
- When using multiple serums, start from lightest to richest textures.
- Example: Hydrating → Brightening → Anti-aging.
Step 6: Moisturizer
Goal: Seal in prior layers, retain moisture, and strengthen the skin barrier.
- Apply a pea-sized amount and dot it on five points of the face.
- Spread from the center outward using gentle pressing motions.
- For oily skin, use lightweight gels or emulsions. Dry skin benefits from richer creams.
Step 7: Sunscreen (Daytime)
Goal: Shield the skin from UV rays – the main cause of aging and dark spots.
- Apply every morning after moisturizer.
- Use two fingers’ length of sunscreen for face and neck.
- Spread evenly and wait 15–20 minutes before sun exposure.
- Note: Sunscreen is essential daily—even on cloudy days or if you don’t wear makeup.
The Japanese skincare routine is simple yet requires consistency, attention, and choosing the right products. Just 6–7 basic steps can help your skin stay healthy, calm, and beautiful in the long run. That’s the spirit of “less is more.”
